10 Fun Things to Do in New Braunfels: May 2018 Edition

1. Party at Wein and Saengerfest

Wein and Saengerfest is back this year, and admission to the event is free! This festival will have a slew of entertainment and activities, from live music to grape stomping, artisan markets, food seminars, dancing in the street, and so much more. Wein and Saengerfest proceeds benefit the New Braunfels Parks Foundation and the Downtown Association.

When: May 5, 12:00 PM - 10:00 PM

2. Visit a Mural Dedication

A new mural is joining the New Braunfels art family! Named “El Legado De Nuestra Jornada” (The Legacy of Our Journey), this public mural was commissioned by The Historic Outdoor Art Museum and reflects a timeline of Hispanic heritage dating from the 1680’s to 1845. Designed by MOSAIC Artist-in-Residence Alex Rubio, the 12-by-60 ft. mural was completed by lead MOSAIC Student Artists Laura Gonzalez, Rachel Kamata, Zöe Reyes, and Elizabeth Samuel. The dedication will take place on May 3rd with a reception to follow at the Seekatz Opera House.

3. See Dwight Yoakam Live

Dwight Yoakam is coming to Whitewater Amphitheatre this May! This beloved artist will play a range of classics, as well as new material he has created over the years. Yoakam’s newfound bluegrass sound will blend with old fan favorites to create a memorable evening. Opening the show is Kevin Fowler and Two Tons of Steel. Tickets are available here!

4. Compete in a Fun Run

Looking for a fun run that the whole family (pets included) can attend? The 2nd Annual New Braunfels Heart and Stroke Walk is happening the second weekend in May to promote walking as a healthy lifestyle and to raise money for cardiovascular/stroke research! Get out there and get fit.

5. Head to a Golf-and-Bowl Event

The 2nd Annual Solms “Swing & Roll” Fundraiser is happening this month in New Braunfels. A full day of 18 holes of scramble golf, lunch at the club and 2 games of 9-pin bowling will surely make for a great Saturday. More information is available on the Facebook page.

6. Peruse Artisan Goods at Market Days

Gruene Market Days is an artisan market held in the Historic Gruene District on the 3rd weekend of every month. Vendors at Market Days are artisans in their craft and have made all of the products themselves, from woodworking pieces to spices and jams.

7. Cheer on a River Relay Race

The Carry the Load Relay team is doing their West Coast Route of the 2018 National Relay in the Comal River on May 22nd. Locals are encouraged to gather at 444 Tubing Company to meet the relay team and cheer them on!

8. Watch Alex Meixner Perform

The King of Polka himself (Alex Meixner) will be at Krause’s Cafe for the last weekend of the month to kick off Maifest, a German tradition to welcome in the Spring! To get in, you must buy a table for 8 people and tickets may sell fast. Get a little midseason polka medicine while we wait for Wurstfest in the Fall!

9. Have a Ball at Downtown Social

Downtown Social offers a variety of fun for everyone, including bowling, bar games, sports on television, and a full restaurant and bar! From Tuesday trivia night to Wednesday night karaoke and weekend music performances, there’s always something going on.

It’s almost summer time and that means the river will be packed full of people.
