NEW BRAUNFELS REAL ESTATE NEWS

The Foodie’s Guide to New Braunfels

But when you think about the fact that New Braunfels was founded by German settlers, you'll understand why this Texas city is able to cook up authentic, homemade, mind-blowing food that will have you salivating for more. We are so proud of the small businesses and eateries that choose to make this place home, becoming a part of our town’s fabric and culture.

As an homage to them, we have compiled a list of some of the popular areas in town! So, for all you foodies out there, here is your guide to New Braunfels eats.

West San Antonio Street

Granzin’s Bar-B-Q

Granzin’s is the local barbecue that everyone talks about. They serve the Hill Country community some mighty fine barbecue...plus side dishes. While Granzin’s dishes up some of the best potato salad around (and the coleslaw is a must), what people talk most about are the insanely flavorful breakfast tacos they serve. Our verdict: definitely a place to go to in the mornings for a handheld meal!

Cravings

What started as a humble sandwich shop in 2008 has quickly become a frequent stop for locals and tourists alike. Cravings is still a restaurant that makes everything from scratch, offering its customers fresh and (very) tasty meals all day. If you have never been there before, we recommend getting the Envy Sandwich: a turkey sandwich that will make you rethink the mundane packed lunch you are used to. People also talk highly about the chicken pesto sandwich, and we hear that the daily fresh soups are always a winner. Our verdict: this is a great stop for lunch that won’t break the bank or the belt!

Huisache Grill

Huisache Grill is the best for two reasons: it is a fantastic place for date night or special events, and it is always funny to hear first-timers try and pronounce the name ("Huey-sachey??"). Known for knock-out main courses and an incredible list of featured wines, we recommend the pecan dusted pork tenderloin medallions and the chicken Yucatan paired with a nice red or white.  Midweek visitors can enjoy the Wine on Tap Thursdays and Half-Priced Bottle Wine Mondays for those looking to indulge during the workweek.  Our verdict: Huisache is the perfect spot for the weekenders looking to treat themselves.

Common Street

A Tan Asian Bistro & Sushi Bar

Looking for something less “Texas” and a little more exotic? Try something uncommon on Common Street at  A-Tan Asian Bistro & Sushi Bar. One local favorite is an order of gyoza for an appetizer, and a bowl of delicious tonkatsu ramen for the main meal. Sushi lovers will want to get there for happy hour (4-6) for some great deals on their amazing sushi rolls. A-Tan has been growing in popularity and has options for even the pickiest of eaters. Our verdict: there is something for everyone here!

Buttermilk Cafe

When we went and asked a few friends about their favorite spot in New Braunfels, almost every person said  Buttermilk Cafe! Certified Executive Chef Carol Irwin has won numerous local and regional chef awards and is known to create winning restaurants. Buttermilk biscuits and pancakes are a no-brainer here, and for lunch, try the fried green tomatoes and any of the wonderful entrees that make you feel like you are home for the holidays.  Our verdict: unassuming plus incredible food equals winning!

Seguin Avenue

Friesenhaus

How could we have gotten so far on this list and not mentioned any German food? Friesenhaus is famous around here for being a family owned, authentic German restaurant. Handmade with love, Friesenhaus serves up great German food (that has been in the Top 25 Best German Restaurants in America three times!). This is the place to bring those relatives who visit and want that "real German Texas Hill Country" experience (but can’t make it for Wurstfest). Too many amazing entrees with complex German names to list, and the best German beer available as well. Our verdict: stop in and try some yourself!

 Faust Hotel & Brewing Co.

Restored to its 1920s look and offering modern hotel services, the Faust Hotel & Brewing Company offers a “beer-inspired” menu for those who want to grab a great beer and chow down. The Faust Wellington is their signature dish - adding the German flare to the menu- and German nachos and mini-dogs are available for those looking to snack on great bites while socializing. They usually host fun events throughout the year for people of all ages to come and have fun.  Our verdict: A  unique blend of old-world culture and fantastic fun.

Iron Horse Grill

If you have the courage to claim the website “bestburgertexas.com,” then you better have a pretty good burger to back it up.  For those of you who are looking for a greasy food menu, this place, obviously known for its hamburgers, is also known for its fabulous fried items like fried pickles and mushrooms. It maintains the charm of a weathered New Braunfels mainstay and combines a family-friendly feel with the live music bar atmosphere, making this a special place for people of any age looking for good food and good fun.  Our verdict: Iron Horse Grill lives up to the hype and then some.

Gruene

Gruene River Grill

Next time you are in Gruene, mosey on down the street from the famous Gristmill to another local favorite - Gruene River Grill. Known to be the best food in Gruene, reviewers of this establishment cannot say enough about the shrimp wontons, which is a great starter for the people who want to try a large portion of this menu. For the main course, we suggest the Chicken Guadalupe with a bottle of Texas wine off of their extensive list.  Our verdict: there isn’t really a bad item on the menu.

If you’re looking for something quirky and unique, The River House should fit the bill. Amazing food and atmosphere, with hidden tables outside and lovely wooden decks, you should definitely make this Gruene eatery a stop on your list of restaurants. Our verdict: this place is becoming more and more popular, so be sure to get a reservation beforehand!
