5 NB Community Centers Better Than Schlitterbahn

Okay...we’ll admit: no one can rival Schlitterbahn’s splashy, colorful aqua-kingdom of waterslides and wading pools. But Schlitterbahn’s freshwater fun also comes with long lines, summer crowds, and a pricey entrance ticket.

So when those 100+ temperatures roll in (and New Braunfels is crowded with tourists seeking Comal-flavored relief from the sweltering heat), many NB natives skip the hassle and opt instead for a short walk to their neighborhood’s resort-style community center

5. Copper Ridge

Far more than just neighborhood with a high-end set of amenities, Copper Ridge sets itself apart by offering a true sense of community. The active, resort-style community center acts as a gathering place, inviting you to “bring the kids” along to the community pool complex (complete with both lap and play pool) and clubhouse to exercise, play, or lounge with neighbors. On-site tennis and basketball courts offer further leisure entertainment, while a “Texas-style pavilion” provides a fireplace, grill setup, and plenty of picnic tables. Add in the private homeowners' park, and we give Copper Ridge our official recommendation for “well-rounded amenities.”

4. Havenwood at Hunter’s Crossing

The setting for an active family community, Havenwood at Hunter’s Crossing boasts an amenities complex fit for any pool-obsessed homebody. Featuring a swimming complex with multiple pools, fitness centers, and tennis courts, this neighborhood also offers basketball, tennis, and volleyball courts, a “Family Reunion” pavilion perfect for parties, beautiful private parks, and miles of scenic walking trails.

3. River Chase

Located several miles north of New Braunfels proper, River Chase boasts that true Hill Country sort of charm that local homeowners crave. Nestled within this quiet neighborhood, a community clubhouse, swimming pools, and a sprawling patio complement fitness center and a cozy common room that often hosts community gatherings (complete charming fireplace and exposed beam ceiling). Additionally, residents enjoy a tennis court, baseball diamond, and plenty of paved walking paths. But what really sets River Chase apart? The neighborhood preserves a 58-acre community park (aptly named “River Park”) that provides residents with private access to the Guadalupe River. With tubing and swimming access at your toes, who needs to worry about the sweaty tourists?

2. John Newcombe Estate

A shiny-new housing development (est 2010) off Highway 46, John Newcombe Estate is a gated community that aims to provide a luxury experience for its residents. Living up to its own high standards, John Newcombe Estate offers a first-class Country Club, complete with a pristine swimming pool, full-service fitness club (offering strength & conditioning, aerobic, pilates, and yoga classes), premier tennis facility (designed by tennis legends John Newcombe and Cliff Drysdale), and childcare. Nature enthusiasts can also take advantage of on-site catch-and-release fishing ponds (stocked with native fish) and plenty of nature and walking trails throughout the community.

1250 Vintage Way, Vintage Oaks

1. Vintage Oaks

While many neighborhoods may generously advertise “resort-style amenities”, Vintage Oaks hands-down wins the bonafide #1 spot on our list. Going above-and-beyond the typical pool-and-clubhouse setup, this luxury neighborhood offers a sprawling 25-acre amenity complex, featuring a Tuscan-Style clubhouse, fitness center, Olympic-sized pool, lazy river pool, and splash pool, all with plenty of chaise and lounge seating. For the more athletically inclined, Vintage Oaks also offers a sand volleyball court, outdoor tennis courts, regulation soccer field, a putting green, and little league baseball field. The neighborhood also maintains a native flower garden, private vineyard, beautiful picnic area (shaded by century-old oak trees), private parks, and over 8 miles of ambling nature trails. Like, they honestly thought of everything.
