What’s Happening Down the Road? 5 Hand-Picked July Events in Seguin

Big enough to boast a top-rated university and a state-of-the-art hospital, yet small enough to offer that small town Texas charm, Seguin offers a range of cultural and recreational activities.

One of the oldest towns in Texas, this manufacturing king built up quite an inspiring downtown area in the early 20th century, deeming it one of the first “Main Street” cities in the state. And In case you haven’t been paying attention, that very downtown area, full of gorgeous Art Deco style architecture, has been getting a major facelift and is quickly becoming the place to be.

As a charter member of the Texas Main Street Program of the Texas Historical Commission, Seguin is now deeply involved in the program, which is dedicated to the economic revitalization of downtown through historic preservation. Amongst the revitalization and development, you may be surprised to find a (soon to be) brewery, theater, library, and coffee shop.

In fact, with 26 blocks of everything from eateries to amusement parks (and that’s only downtown!) you’d be crazy not to check out this rising star on the San Antonio metro scene. Not sure where to go? Let us help. We’ve handpicked five events in July sure to appeal to the masses.

1. Learn to Play Tennis- For Free!

Want to send your kids to a tennis program but don’t want to pay the outrageous fees? If you have ever found yourself in that situation, then this is the perfect program for your future tennis star. The San Antonio Tennis Association has teamed up with the San Antonio Parks & Recreation Department, USTA Texas and The Paul Wiegand Foundation and are offering FREE tennis programs to budding (and advanced) athletes, ages 6-15, this summer in and around the city of San Antonio, with one of the sites being in Seguin.

Aiming to teach the game of tennis while promoting an active lifestyle and positive character, these free tennis classes for girls and boys runs Tuesday and Thursday mornings through Thursday, July 28th at the Seguin High School tennis courts.

Offering fun games and activities as an introduction to tennis, anyone who is interested should attend, regardless of tennis experience. No equipment? No worries! Rackets and balls will be provided, as well as water to quench the thirst your child will work up on the courts! Though this program started earlier this summer, it’s never too late to drop in on a few lessons- attend one or all of the remaining sessions!

For additional information visit http://satennis.org/NJTL.html or call SATA coordinator, Jesse Tarin at 210-788-7781.

When: Tuesday and Thursday Mornings through July 28th

Where: Seguin High School, N. Highway 123 Bypass and E. Cedar Street

2 . Wine, BBQ, and Grape-Stomping, Oh My!

Known for their events and their wine, the Blue Lotus Winery is putting on three (yes 3!) events in July. First on the agenda, let the artist in you come out and play while you learn to paint a wine bottle and glass (while sipping out of a wine glass…) No experience is necessary, and the $45 fee includes all of your materials and a glass of wine.

Next, make plans for the amateur BBQ festival the following weekend. If you’ve ever felt like you might want to try your hand at cooking up some excellent ‘cue, but have felt intimidated by the competition at those big cook-offs, this is the event for you. Held at the Blue Lotus Winery, the amateur BBQ Festival will be a community event for the entire family. Featuring music from the Dirty River Dixie Band, eats from Texas Best BBQ, and wares from local artisans, you’ll be glad we told you about this event.

Finally, get your toes dirty as you experience some barefoot grape-stomping fun! You’ll most likely work up an appetite, but don’t worry- Blue Lotus has you covered. Included in the $39 event fee is an Italian meal, and of course, not one, but TWO glasses of Blue Lotus Wine. Take a t-shirt home with some grape-stained footprints on call it a day!

Out of ideas for summer activities? Here’s one you may have missed! The Seguin Outdoor Learning Center is hosting community hikes throughout the summer and invites you to bring your family on a stroll through “a nearly untouched riparian wilderness” during their interpretive monthly hikes.

With the help of the Guadalupe Master Naturalist Chapter, hikers will explore a different theme each month, concentrating on animals, food, plants, trees, tracks, shelters, and soils. With the next hike scheduled for mid July, you’ll want to make sure you pencil in Wednesday, July 13th at 6 pm on your calendar.

While no pets are allowed, children and adults of all ages are welcome. Call 830-379-7652 or email solcstaff@gvec.net for more information. This event is always free, however, donations are accepted.

4. Revitalize Your Soul With a Yoga Alternative

Often translated as “love”, the Greek word agape, in essence, means “goodwill, benevolence, and willful delight in the object of love.” Different from the English translation of love, agape is not based on a feeling; rather, it is a determined act of will and a joyful resolve to put the welfare of others above your own.

For both the agape love and yoga enthusiast, First Presbyterian Church is holding free “Agape Moves” classes every Saturday from 10:00-11:15 am in Karrick Fellowship Hall.

A Christian alternative to yoga, Agape Moves invites participants to practice breathing and stretching techniques for relaxation, fitness, and Christ-focused meditation. If you plan on coming, please bring a mat or a towel! For more information, please contact Carol Willmann at 830-379-8565 or the church office at 830-379-5421.

When: Saturdays @ 10:00AM

Where: 305 N King St, Seguin, TX 78155

5. Drink Local at Seguin Brewing Company

Cofounded by a native Seguinian, this brew is crafted with passion and a refusal to settle for a poor product. And it’s a good thing they don’t settle- it is because of this passion for brewing excellent beer that prompted the Seguin Brewing Company to begin brewing local craft beer with styles ranging from their signature “Honey Pecan #5” to their deep-bodied “Black Rye Reserve” IPA. But that’s not all you’ll find at this brewery; a choice of six beers total are available for you to give a taste. Of course, you’ll want to take the FREE tour before you taste so you can get a good glimpse at what goes into brewing this fine beer.

Join the fun on Saturdays from 1-5, and feel free to bring your own chair (they do have picnic tables available), food, and games. This place is both pet and kid friendly, so bring them along, too! Moving to downtown Seguin soon, come see them at their current location before it closes!

When: Saturdays @ 1-5

Where: 320 Beicker Rd, Seguin, TX, 78155
